SDRE Secures $150M to Expand Housing Supply in San Diego
San Diego real estate developer SDRE has obtained $150 million in financing to help ease the region’s housing shortage. The capital, provided by funds managed by affiliates of Fortress Investment Group, represents one of the city’s largest recent investments in residential development and underscores San Diego’s growing appeal as a high-growth housing market.
Meeting Demand in a Tight Market
With San Diego’s population continuing to expand, the local housing market remains under intense pressure. SDRE plans to channel the financing into projects that will add nearly 1,000 new homes by 2025, with ambitions to deliver 2,000 units by 2026.
The need is urgent: as of June 2025, rents across San Diego County climbed 4.1% year-over-year, while the city itself experienced a sharper 9.3% increase, according to data from the Southern California Rental Housing Association.
- “This investment reflects our confidence in San Diego’s growth potential,” said Christian Spicer, CEO of SDRE. “We are committed to tackling the housing shortage while creating lasting value for the community.”
Broader Economic Impact
In addition to boosting the housing supply, SDRE’s construction pipeline is expected to generate new employment in both building and property management. Local businesses will benefit from increased demand, and the expansion of affordable housing is likely to strengthen the city’s economic base and attract future infrastructure investment.
